Dr. Ryan Metcalf is Section Chief of Transfusion Medicine, Medical Director of the Transfusion Service, Associate Professor of Pathology, and Inpatient Chief Value Officer for the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah Health and ARUP Laboratories. He completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Stanford University and is board certified in these disciplines. His research interests include the use of advanced data visualization to improve understanding of patient blood management (PBM) clinical practice quality, evidence-based clinical decision making, and data-driven approaches to improve our understanding of risks associated with blood transfusion. He is co-inventor of a novel advanced data visualization tool that evaluates PBM practice. Dr. Metcalf is Chair of the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee. He received ARUP’s Bill Roberts Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine in 2023.

Dr Shruthi Narayan is the Medical Director of Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT, UK). It is the independent, professionally led haemovigilance scheme covering the whole of UK. Additionally, she has a role as a Donor Consultant at NHS Blood and Transplant. Shruthi also chairs the Royal College of Pathologists Transfusion Specialty Advisory Committee, is a member of the leadership team of International Society of Blood Transfusion Haemovigilance Working Party and is the current President of the International Haemovigilance Network. Shruthi is passionate about improving transfusion safety, is actively involved in transfusion education and improvement initiatives.
“Steven J. Drews, Ph.D., F.C.C.M., D(ABMM), completed his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia, in Experimental Medicine (Infectious Diseases). He did his clinical microbiology training at the University of Toronto. At Canadian Blood Services, as Director of Medical Microbiology, Steve provides guidance on transmissible diseases testing, microbiology, and infectious diseases issues. He also provides educational opportunities to Canadian Blood Services staff and trainees and leads and mentors the Medical Microbiology group as well as the Surveillance and Discovery Laboratory group.
Steve has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and booked chapters. He has held or been a team member on multiple Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grants and is currently an active member of the CIHR College of Reviewers. Prior to joining Canadian Blood Services, Steve was a consultant microbiologist at the Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (ProvLab) Alberta (in both Calgary and Edmonton sites), and the head of the province-wide influenza and acute respiratory viral diagnostics program as well as other programs. He has also held a prior position as Head of Molecular Diagnostics for the Public Health Ontario Laboratories.
Steve has significant experience representing diagnostic microbiology and public health laboratories at provincial, national and international committees. He has held faculty positions at both the University of Toronto and the University of Calgary. Steve is currently a full Professor in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta Edmonton, Canada where he is a member of WCHRI, the Women and Children's Health Research Institute. In Edmonton Steve continues to teach and mentor undergraduate students, and Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology trainees.”
Susan Noone, MPH, CQA(ASQ) is an Executive Director at Vitalant with over 30 years
of leadership in transfusion medicine and blood banking. She is a certified Quality
Auditor with the American Society for Quality and an AABB Assessor. Susan currently
serves as Chair of AABB’s Blood Banks and Transfusion Services Committee and is a
member of the Transfusion Medicine Subsection Coordinating Committee. She has
previously led two state-level transfusion medicine organizations as President and
received the Upton-Hemphill Award from the California Blood Bank Society. She
currently serves as an Executive Board Member for Blood Centers of California and the
Ventura County Healthcare Coalition. She also currently serves on the Council of States
for America’s Blood Centers. A frequent speaker at AABB meetings and contributor to
AABB publications, Susan is recognized for advancing quality, regulatory, and
leadership practices in transfusion medicine.
