A hematopathology and transfusion medicine consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I serve as the International Society of Blood Transfusion, ISBT Young Professional Council representative of the Eastern Mediterranean region and the Social Media Editor and Ambassador for Transfusion Medicine Reviews. An active member in numerous professional international societies, including the ISBT, the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), and The American Society for Apheresis (ASFA). An ISBT Harold Gunson Fellowship Award recipient in 2022 for young investigators. Areas of expertise include malignant and non-malignant hematopathology, clinical transfusion with special focus on patients with hemoglobinopathies, Patient Blood Management, apheresis, and cell therapy. I am also passionate about promoting better transfusion practice and am actively involved in research and education.

Paul Strengers,,MD, joined in 1986 the Central Laboratory of the Netherlands Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (CLB) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was Medical Director of CLB Blood Bank, Medical Director at CAF-DCF in Brussels, Belgium, and Director Medical Affairs and Product Development at Sanquin Blood Supply, Division of Plasma Products. His research and activities in blood transfusion medicine research are focused on clinical transfusion medicine and sciences i.a. haemophilia and inhibitors to factor VIII, coagulation and the reversal of anti- coagulant therapy, intravenous immunoglobulins and its indications, haemovigilance and pharmacovigilance, and blood transfusion quality, ethics and organization. He was President of the International Haemovigilance Network, Secretary-General of the International Society of Blood Transfusion, President and Executive Director of the International Plasma and Fractionation Association, Chairman of the Netherlands Red Cross, Amsterdam, and Member of the Expert Committee on Biological Standardization, section Blood, of the World Health Organization. Currently, he is Consultant on Blood and Plasma Strategies, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Netherlands’ Royal Tropical Institute, and President of the Foundation Transfusion Medicine. Publications include author or co-author of more than 150 scientific papers.

Dr. Raef Albugami is a distinguished Consultant Clinical Scientist with almost two decades of experience in laboratory medicine, particularly in transfusion, transplantation science, and cellular therapy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from King Saud University (2006), a Master’s in Laboratory Medicine (with a major in Transfusion and Transplantation Science) from RMIT University, Melbourne (2011), and a Ph.D. in Transplant Immunology and Immunotherapy from the University of Birmingham (2020). Dr. Albugami began his career in 2006 at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), advancing into leadership roles. He co-founded and led the Stem Cell Processing Laboratory, and currently heads the Flow Cytometry and Cellular Therapy Processing Laboratory. He also received specialized training in hematopoietic stem cell processing from the Paul O’Gorman Laboratory of Cellular Therapeutics at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He has held strategic leadership and advisory roles, including Deputy Executive Director for Laboratory Operations at the Health Support Services Center (HSSC) under the Ministry of Health, and as Chair of the National Stem Cell Committee at the Saudi Health Council. He has contributed to national initiatives such as the Choosing Wisely campaign and the Laboratory Test Menu Guideline Project. He also serves on academic advisory boards at Majmaah University and Aljouf University. Dr. Albugami is a certified FACT-JACIE inspector for stem cell processing laboratories, an ISO 15189 inspector with the Saudi Accreditation Centre, as well as a Certified Key Performance Indicators Professional (C-KPI), Certified Strategy and Business Planning Professional (C-SBP), and Certified Change Management Specialist (CMS®). He co-founded the Society for Oncology Research (Daem), chairs the Scholarship Department at the Riyadh Second Health Cluster and KFMC, and remains a driving force for innovation and quality in healthcare. Most notably, in April 2025, Dr. Albugami was conferred dual Fellowships by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua)—in Leadership in Healthcareand in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning in Healthcare—reflecting his expertise and leadership in emerging domains of healthcare quality and innovation.

Dr. Reem Ali AlRadwan is the Director of Blood Transfusion Administration Services and Medical Director of the Kuwait Central Blood Bank at the Ministry of Health. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.Ch) from Kuwait University (1987) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in Transfusion Medicine. She is also a certified assessor by AABB and AIHQ. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. AlRadwan has led major national projects such as RFID implementation, NAT screening, and automation of blood services. She serves on national and international boards including AABB, ISBT, and the GCC Blood Transfusion Committee. Under her leadership, Kuwait collected over 93,000 blood units in 2023 and launched campaigns like “Kuwait in My Blood.” She received the Sheikh Jaber Quality Award (2009) and the Arab Blood Transfusion Prize (2010). A recognized leader in transfusion medicine, she has achieved multiple AABB accreditations and advanced blood safety across Kuwait.

Dr. Ruchika Goel is a Senior Medical Director, Corporate Medical Affairs at Vitalant National Office in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. She also serves as a Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, at SIU School of Medicine and an adjunct faculty in the Department of Pathology, Division of Transfusion Medicine, at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Goel did her Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at the Combined program at Johns Hopkins University/National Cancer Institute at NIH followed by a Transfusion Medicine Fellowship, at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell and New York Blood Center. Dr. Goel serves a dual role as a practicing hematologist/oncologist with a focus on benign and malignant hematology and a transfusion medicine physician and is actively engaged in research in Big Data and Novel Computational Methods in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine with a special interest in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Hemostasis/Thrombosis. She also serves as an invited consultant and subject matter expert for the NIH/NHLBI funded REDS-IV-P longitudinal studies. She is the current chair of the Pediatric Subgroup of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). Dr. Goel has multiple accolades to her name including the AABB Fenwal Future Leader TM Scholarship Award, Paul J. Stranjford Young Investigator award by the American College of Laboratory Physician and Scientists, BEST Collaborative Scott Murphy Lectureship, 40 under 40 award for exemplary clinical service and has also received international recognition with the ISBT Harold Gunsen fellowship and the Australian and New Zealand Blood Transfusion Society Presidential award. Dr. Goel has over 140 peer reviewed publications and book chapters to her name including key first author publications in some leading journals including JAMA, JAMA Surgery, Blood, Transfusion, Lancet Americas, and Vox Sanguinis and has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally on topics of her research focus.

Dr. Evan Bloch is an Professor of Pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he serves as the Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine and Medical Director of the Apheresis Service; he also holds a joint appointment in International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Originally from South Africa, Dr. Bloch’s research is focused on global health and transfusion medicine. He has a particular interest in the interplay with infectious diseases, given that transfusion transmitted infection remains a metric of suboptimal policies and practices in low and low-middle income countries.

John Manis completed training in Internal Medicine and in Hematology, Oncology at Tufts Medical Center where he studied B cell biology with Dr. Robert Schwartz. He then moved to Children’s Hospital Boston to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Frederick Alt where he worked on basic mechanisms that control programmed DNA breaks in B cells of the immune system. In 2004, he joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston to start work to understand basic mechanisms that control B cell development examining DNA damage response and repair pathways. He completed training in Transfusion Medicine fellowship in 2010, and is now the Director of Transfusion Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. He participates in over a dozen cellular therapy trials, including trials to improve mobilization and collection of stem cells in sickle cell disease. He is part of the CURE sickle cell initiative launched by the NHLBI (NIH) where he chairs the committee for apheresis research and oversees a clinical trial to collect stem cells for a national repository. He is a co-investigator in multiple clinical trials testing gene therapy approaches to ameliorate sickle cell anemia.

Dr. Kyle Annen, DO, CABP, QIA (ASCP), is Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Medical Director of Apheresis and Cellular Therapy at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She is a recognized authority in pediatric apheresis, cellular therapy, and transfusion medicine, with clinical oversight of therapeutic apheresis, stem cell processing, and donor center operations. Dr. Annen has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Transfusion, Journal of Clinical Apheresis, and Clinical Infectious Diseases, and contributed to key reference texts such as Therapeutic Apheresis: A Handbook and Pediatric Transfusion: A Handbook. She serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Apheresis and holds national leadership roles, including Chair of the AABB Therapeutic Apheresis and Transfusion Practice Subcommittee and Chair of the ASFA Clinical Applications Pediatric Subcommittee.

Paul Mansfield is the Director of the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and the National Reference Laboratory for Blood Group Serology at the American Red Cross . He has almost 25 years of experience in Immunohematology. He holds certifications from the American Society of Clinical Pathology as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Specialist in Blood Banking. He is very active with the AABB in support of the IRLs as the current Chair of the IRL Accreditation Committee and is on the IRL Standards Committee. He is a member of the Invitational Conference of Investigational Immunohematologists and International Society of Blood Transfusion in which he is on the working party for Immunohematology.

The Saudi International Conference on Blood Transfusion is a prominent scientific event at the national and international level, organized by the Blood Transfusion Services Center – Health Support Services Center, MOH. The conference aims to address the latest advancements and challenges in the field of blood transfusion, while promoting quality of care and patient safety.
