Dr. Hala Alsoukhni

Consultant in Clinical Pathology - Hematopathology

Dr. Hala Alsoukhni is a consultant in Clinical Pathology with a subspeciality in hematopathology, bringing more than 15 years of experience in the field, currently serving as Head of Stem Cell Laboratory at the Military Cancer Center-Royal Medical Services. Graduated from Jordan University of Science and Technology-Faculty of Medicine in 2005, completed residency in clinical pathology/hematopathology at King Hussein Medical Center in 2011. She has completed fellowship in stem cell transplantation in Milano-Italy in 2018 and earned the Jordanian Board of stem cell processing and transplantation and later received advanced training in CAR T cell manufacturing in Cologne-Germany. She is the founder of Stem Cell Laboratory at the Jordanian Royal Medical Services, where she has played a leading role in advancing cellular therapy services. Dr. Hala continues to contribute to both clinical practice and research in the evolving field of regenerative medicine and actively involved in the first CAR T cell therapy trial in Jordan.

Team Lead for Blood and Other Products of Human Origin

Dr. Maryuningsih is the Team Lead for Blood and Other Products of Human Origin at the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters. She brings over 30 years of expertise in transfusion medicine, blood screening for transfusion-transmitted infections, and blood bank leadership. At WHO, she leads the development of global guidance for blood services and provides technical support to countries. Dr. Maryuningsih is the recipient of the International Plasma and Fractionation Association (IPFA) Award in 2023 and the Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine (AATM) Award in 2024. She regularly contributes to country-level support in areas such as blood regulatory systems and good manufacturing practices for blood establishments.

Dr. Roland L. Fahie is an internationally recognized expert in transfusion medicine with over 40 years of distinguished service. A retired U.S. Navy Captain, he served as Director of the U.S. Department of Defense Armed Services Blood Program, overseeing safe blood collection and transfusion across more than 90 facilities, including combat units, hospital ships, and NATO partners. He currently serves as an AABB Staff Lead Inspector, CAP Inspector, and CLIA Inspector, ensuring global compliance with transfusion standards. As Associate Professor at George Washington University, he continues to teach and mentor future leaders in the field. Dr. Roland L. Fahie pioneered key innovations such as Group O Low-Titer Whole Blood for combat trauma, pathogen reduction and cold-stored platelets, and extending frozen RBC shelf life. He has contributed to global blood safety projects through PEPFAR and has numerous publications advancing transfusion medicine worldwide.

Paul Mansfield is the Director of the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and the National Reference Laboratory for Blood Group Serology at the American Red Cross . He has almost 25 years of experience in Immunohematology. He holds certifications from the American Society of Clinical Pathology as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Specialist in Blood Banking. He is very active with the AABB in support of the IRLs as the current Chair of the IRL Accreditation Committee and is on the IRL Standards Committee. He is a member of the Invitational Conference of Investigational Immunohematologists and International Society of Blood Transfusion in which he is on the working party for Immunohematology.

Dr. Ruchika Goel is a leading physician-scientist specializing in hematology, oncology, and transfusion medicine. She serves as Senior Medical Director at Vitalant and holds academic appointments at SIU School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Goel completed her Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University/National Cancer Institute (NIH) and a Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Weill Cornell/New York Blood Center. Her research focuses on Big Data and computational methods in hematology and transfusion medicine, emphasizing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and hemostasis/thrombosis. She is the current Chair of the Pediatric Subgroup of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and serves as an NIH/NHLBI consultant for REDS-IV-P studies. Dr. Goel has received numerous prestigious awards, including the AABB Fenwal Future Leader Scholarship and ISBT Harold Gunsen Fellowship, and has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications in top journals such as JAMA, Blood, and Transfusion.

Christopher Thickett is an International Product Manager (Reagents), Immunohematology Division, Bio-Rad Laboratories. Chris had over 25 years of experience within NHS blood transfusion/ reference laboratories, 16 years of which at Senior Biomedical Scientist level together with additional employment as a visiting university lecturer in Transfusion Science (BSc/ Msc programmes, Hull University), delivering knowledge and sharing his passion of the subject with the next generation. Chris holds a Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) Pathological Sciences (Blood Transfusion/Transplantation) awarded 2008 from the University of Sheffield/ Sheffield Hallam University and HNC Medical Laboratory Sciences 1991-1993 from the Sheffield Hallam University.

Susan Noone, MPH, CQA(ASQ) is an Executive Director at Vitalant with over 30 years of leadership in transfusion medicine and blood banking. She is a certified Quality Auditor with the American Society for Quality and an AABB Assessor. Susan currently serves as Chair of AABB’s Blood Banks and Transfusion Services Committee and is a member of the Transfusion Medicine Subsection Coordinating Committee. She has previously led two state-level transfusion medicine organizations as President and received the Upton-Hemphill Award from the California Blood Bank Society. She currently serves as an Executive Board Member for Blood Centers of California and the Ventura County Healthcare Coalition. She also currently serves on the Council of States for America’s Blood Centers. A frequent speaker at AABB meetings and contributor to AABB publications, Susan is recognized for advancing quality, regulatory, and leadership practices in transfusion medicine.

Dr. Bassim is a consultant of Adult Hematology & Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (TCT) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSHRC) Jeddah, with more than 23 years of experience in adult hematology and transplantation with a focused interest in Patient Blood Management (PBM) leading an organizational based project of PBM Implementation at KFSHRC. Dr. Bassim Holds the qualifications of American & Canadian Boards of Internal Medicine & Hematology along with Master of Science (MSC) of Cellular Immune Therapy of Cancer and The Clinician Investigator Program Certificate (CIP) of the RCPSC. Dr. Mona Kandel, Blood Bank Registrar at the Blood Transfusion Services Center of the Ministry of Health, with more than 20 years of experience in blood transfusion medicine & blood bank services management. She holds certifications in quality management, assigned as scientific coordinator for Blood Transfusion Services Center Steering Committee, participates in the regulatory and oversight committees for hemovigilance and patients safety., obtained Certified Professional Certificate in Patient Safety (CPPS) that is awarded by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) USA, and she is regularly contributes to research and training initiatives related to blood services quality improvement and patient safety.

The Saudi International Conference on Blood Transfusion is a prominent scientific event at the national and international level, organized by the Blood Transfusion Services Center – Health Support Services Center, MOH. The conference aims to address the latest advancements and challenges in the field of blood transfusion, while promoting quality of care and patient safety.
